PRLog - July 25, 2012 - MELBOURNE, Australia -- The Fan Manufacturers Association of Australia and New Zealand (FMA ANZ) have recently released a voluntary code of practice covering the energy efficiency of fan systems.
The voluntary code is non-binding for the industry and outlines acceptable minimum energy performance (MEPS) and high efficiency performance (HEPS) levels for the efficiency of fans across a wide range of applications.
Governments in both Australia and New Zealand are keen to regulate the efficiency of fan systems. Fans have been identified as considerable consumers of power and of great enough volume for the recent product profile to state:
“The preliminary analysis suggests that the introduction of MEPS for non-domestic fans could result in significant and cost effective greenhouse gas abatement” (WS Atkins; Product profile: Non domestic fans for the Australian market, May 2012, p8).
MEPS and HEPS systems have been used widely in Australia and New Zealand. They are common for component products such as motors that are often incorporated into other products such as air-conditioning units.
The development of the industry standard allows manufactures and specifiers to define what is required for the application. Using international standards, ISO 5801 and ISO 12759 as the test and efficiency definition benchmark, the FMA have followed the lead of the European Union (ErP 2015) and their local MEPS regulations.
Due to this precedent in the EU, the FMA have been able to define fan minimum efficiency grades (FMEG) and hence fan efficiency for the all the standard fans that are used in the Australian market that have power inputs greater than 125W input power.
The range of products covered by this code includes axial fans, centrifugal fans, mixed flow fans and cross flow fans and therefore covers almost all applications, especially those related to building services. All ebm-papst EC fans and motors comply with the Voluntary Industry Code. Compared to fans with AC motors, ebm-papst GreenTech EC motors attain an efficiency of over 90 percent. This enables achievement of significant energy savings compared to conventional AC solutions.
