July 25, 2012 - PRLog -- CITY OF MARKHAM July 25, 2012: New York, Florence, and Paris - all world-class cities that are tourist, and cultural havens. Each boasts an impressive carousel designed to the cities’ characters. Downtown Markham will soon debut on the world stage with the world’s first solar powered fine-art carousel, made from recycled materials. This masterpiece, the creation of eco-centric artist, Patrick Amoit, will live in the core of the new downtown and establish an eco-friendly vibe to the growing urban centre. Planned to open to the public in Spring/Summer of 2014, the carousel promises to set the stage for many awe-inspiring works of art slated for Downtown Markham.

“Downtown Markham is maturing into an arts, and culture capital of its own.  All aspects of the comprehensive development are committed to fostering the community with art, entertainment, and environmental awareness through the support of great Canadian talent,” said Christopher Bratty, President of Land Development and Investments, The Remington Group.

The creation of Downtown Markham marks a highlight in the longstanding work of recognized development company, The Remington Group. Art and culture, is one of Downtown Markham’s pillars, and the solar powered carousel is the leading contributions to the artistic foundation of the city. The eco-carousel will feature 60 playful kinetic sculptures created from reusable materials.  It will be enclosed in a glass structure so visitors can enjoy the attraction through Canada’s changing seasons.

“My inspiration for the carousel will come from my materials. I am eager to see what I find, and what colors will inspire me,” said Patrick Amiot, carousel designer. “The pieces I am creating for the carousel will be one of a kind and set the groundwork for this budding cultural community within Downtown Markham.”

The retail and residential development of Downtown Markham is an attractive location for residents and the retail market.  At the corner of Warden Avenue and highway 407, Downtown Markham will have two million square feet of retail and dinning, integrated transit, and North America’s largest urban park. $20 million has been invested into the art program. Having the inspiration of arts and culture in the city will revitalize the community, and make Downtown Markham transcend typical city spaces.

This carousel is just one of many installations apart of the arts program that will transform Downtown Markham into a must-visit world destination.  Others include an outdoor museum, art zoo, and street art wall installations.  The goal is a city filled with thought provoking art that will inspire people who work, live and play in the area.
