San Francisco July 23, 2012. The San Francisco International Arts Festival, the Central American Resource Center, Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts and the cast of PLACAS want to know about your tattoos.

More specifically we want to know why you got your tattoo(s) and of what significance it/they are to you. And we would like to record your story on video for posterity. We have commissioned video journalist Josue Rojas to make a video as a companion piece to the play PLACAS starring Ric Salinas of Culture Clash that will premiere at the Lorraine Hansberry Theater on September 6.

So on Saturday August 18 starting at 6:30pm we will be hosting a party at Mission Cultural Center and we are turning the theatre into a film studio where Salinas, playwright Paul Flores and the cast of PLACAS will be interviewing members of the public about their tattoos.

Playwright Flores said of the event, “Tattoos have become a fashion phenomenon. Everyone is wearing them. But getting a tattoo is different from shopping for shoes, clothes or other fashion accessories. It is a decision and a commitment that makes a fundamental statement about how you want to represent yourself. Even the most humble or frivolous tattoo has a deeper meaning for the person who got it burned onto their body. As we get ready to premiere PLACAS, a story about war, street gangs, redemption and the implications of tattoo removal, we thought we would compare the meanings and significance of gang tattoos with those of the rest of the population.”

The evening will also feature the chance to hang out with the cast of PLACAS and get an inside scoop on the new production, groove to the turntable stylings of DJ Aztec Parrot, see tattoo demonstrations, and enjoy great food, drinks and lots more.

So join us for a party and to tell the story behind your most prized tattoo. Participants will also receive discount tickets to attend PLACAS, September 6 – 16, 2012.

Everyone is welcome to attend this event but people who want to be interviewed must RSVP on the Festival website http://www.sfiaf.org or send an e-mail to info@sfiaf.org
