Field Electrical Power Supplies (FEPS) – For Providing Power in Remote / Harsh Environments

More Control was asked to develop a system to effectively remote monitor Rolls Royce Military motor generators to ensure correct operation, status, power procedures and all running parameters.

July 24, 2012 - PRLog -- Rolls Royce has long since been a leading company in providing power on land, sea and air. The skills set of Rolls Royce includes the provision of small generation and distribution systems. Rolls Royce power systems are specified to match end user applications to withstand harsh, remote environments where access to electrical grids is not possible or where rugged high performance is required, such as in the battlefield, at sea, support first responder, disaster relief and security systems.

Over the last few years, Rolls Royce has been developing a series of Field Electrical Power Supplies (FEPS) to be used in remote, inaccessible locations around the world.

Designed for worldwide operation in hostile and demanding environments, the range of highly mobile, diesel powered generators has been developed for expeditionary forces to be able to be deployed to ever-varied climatic conditions. This places a great requirement for components to be able to meet all the environmental working condition for altitude, temperature, dust, humidity. FEPS generators utilise a wide range of components to achieve the separate demanding requirements to ensure accurate power supply, regardless of location / environment.

While the technology has improved significantly to allow the deployment of these FEPS generators in some of the harshest, remote locations around the world; it is not always possible to manage the electrical requirements and is even harder to monitor the status of the generator in remote locations.

Working on several Rolls Royce generators, More Control has been able to develop, program and bespoke Field Electrical Power Supplies (FEPS) to remotely monitor generators in inaccessible locations around the world.

The idea was to track when fuel levels are running low and monitor running processes. Information from the generator is stored locally and remotely via email to any address throughout the world. FEPS generator control has enabled numerous application uses for NATO and army forces to effectively secure mobile power supplies and battlefield distribution systems. Outside of military use, FEPS generators have been used to support areas of the world where there is a limited fixed power system and harsh environmental conditions.

FEPS Generator Specs

Rolls Royce Field Electrical Power Supplies (FEPS) provide a general purpose power capability as opposed to a specific operating level. FEPS generators typically operate in the 8-40kW range, meaning they can be adapted to suit a wide range of applications / projects.

FEPS generators achieve this range in capabilities by using three different generators to cover the 8-40kW range (8/12kW, 16/24kW and 40kW).

The FEPS generators are fully interfaced with in Service Field Electrical Power Distribution Systems (FEPDS) and employ an earth loop monitoring system to ensure the integrity of the supplied power from the generator to the final distribution boxes.

Outside the FEPS role in the British Army, generators can be used for many specialist applications. Compatible with other NATO and US army power generation technologies and field distribution equipment, FEPS are in an ideal position to meet global requirements for customers. FEPS utilises the latest technology including commercial off the shelf components to provide quality, reliable and ease of maintenance with low through life costs.
