PRLog - Jul. 23, 2012 - Millions of Americans suffer from allergies.  For some they are an occasional problem or a seasonal issue, for others they go on all year long.

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America between 15 and 30% of people who suffer from allergies have allergic reactions to cats and dogs.   Many experts state that cat allergies are about twice as common as dog allergies.  Other reports indicate that approximately 10% of the population is allergic to animals.

Allergies to pets are quite common and both furry pets and pets with feathers can cause an allergic reaction in some people.  These pet allergies are caused by people with very sensitive immune systems responding to proteins that can be found in pet urine, saliva and pet dander.  Pet dander refers to materials shed from a pet and is composed of skin cells.

One company that has been helping people identify allergens in the indoor environment is Sussex Environmental Health Consultants (SEHC). Susan White, Ph.D., CMC, President of SEHC stated, “Many people think that pet hair, although a nuisance indoors, is the root cause.  Pet hair is generally not considered a significant allergen, rather it can harbor dander and other allergens including mold, household dust, and pollen.  Even pet birds can expose people to allergens through their feathers and droppings.  Bird dropping can also be the source of exposure to bacteria, dust, and mold.  When susceptible individuals come into contact with pet dander they may respond in a matter of minutes or the response may be delayed for up to several days.  Fortunately, there are ways to quickly test indoor environments to determine if pet allergens are present.”

SEHC recently sponsored an educational video about pet allergens and indoor air quality that can be seen at:
