Kayak For A Cause XII-All About the Charities

Kayak For A Cause is an annual fundraiser where kayakers paddle 12 miles across the LI Sound to raise money for local charities. This year makes the 12th year the event has taken place.

July 22, 2012 - PRLog -- NORWALK-Saturday July 21st, was a warm, sunny, beautiful day, perfect for the annual fundraiser Kayak For A Cause. Paddlers returned to the Long Island Sound once again to raise money for local charities that focus on ways to protect and help the environment and the community.

Family, friends, and even some service dogs gathered at Shady Beach in Norwalk to support Kayak For A Cause (KFAC). 35 paddlers kayaked this year, within the group there were veterans who have paddled for as many as 10 consecutive years and others who made Kayak For A Cause XII their first year.

KFAC XII marked a change for the fundraiser for years to come. This year instead of just one route option, there were three. One where paddlers kayaked from LI to CT, another where kayakers paddled in a boomerang from CT to CT as well as a round trip paddle of 24 miles from CT to LI and back. John Breznen who has been paddling in this fundraiser for four years, took on the round trip challenge this year. After the 24 mile adventure, this is what Breznen had to say about his adventure, “I’ve always liked doing this event”. He agrees that this new route option was a challenge worth taking, and although it targeted his competitive spirit he is glad he can say he did it once, and will probably just stick to the traditional 12 mile route for next year.

As a result of the many sponsors including, Heineken, Voli Vodka, Onyx Moonshine, Purple Turtle Catering, Purdue Pharma, and a private donor simply wanting to help the cause, KFAC was able to cover all of the costs of the event. At least $30,000 has been counted so far and at the KFAC after party it was obvious the KFAC Organizing Committee was thrilled to be able to announce that every dollar raised will be going to those who deserve it the most, the charities.

At the beach party after the paddlers returned, charities such as Canine Companions for Independence, Norwalk River Watershed Association, Fidelco, Builders Beyond Borders, Alzheimer’s Association, Save the Sound and Norwalk Nagarote joined with individual donors, families, friends and paddlers to celebrate the success of this year’s event.
KFAC XII was a smaller event, yet it proved to be intimate and just as special as the previous events. Breznen added, “I really like the direction this event is going in, there are more charities.” He comments on years past and says, “It used to be this huge event with 200 people, and now it’s smaller and more focused on the charities.”
