By: Bellagio Vein Clinic, Dr Alex Kim, Varicose Veins, 480-788-5621 www.bellagioveinclinic.com www.bellagiomedspa.com According to the Vascular Disease Foundation venous problems are probably among the most common chronic conditions in North America and Western Europe. They also report that at least 20-25 million Americans have varicose veins. (Delis, K., & Golviczki, P. 2012) With the numbers this high it is amazing how little the American public actually knows about the disease of varicose veins. “Varicose veins are enlarged, bulging superficial veins that can be felt beneath the skin, generally larger than 3-mm in diameter. They are usually located on the inside of the calf or thigh and develop due to weakness of the vein wall and loss of valve function. Under the pressure of gravity, they continue to enlarge, and in the course of time, they may become elongated, twisted, pouched, and thickened.” (Delis, K., & Golviczki, P. 2012) These veins frequently manifest themselves in 20 to 30 year old woman after pregnancy or in both men and women after 40. (Delis, K., & Golviczki, P.2012) These veins have many causes but the main ones include genetics, long periods of standing, pregnancy, and obesity. In some cases varicose veins are unavoidable but taking action early can really have an impact on the condition of your legs. One of the initial options in varicose vein treatments is wearing compression stockings. In some cases stocking can be enough of a support for your veins and no other treatment will be required. A different step that can be taken if compression stockings are not working is to have sclerotherapy performed. This consists of injecting a medicine into the vein which causes them to shrink and not be visible anymore. Another option for treatment is an EVLT, which is simply closing the vein with the use of laser technology. An optical fiber is inserted into the vein and then removed as it closes the vein behind it. The fourth main option for varicose vein treatment is a phlebectomy. This consists of creating small incisions in the skin and taking the varicose vein completely out of the leg. All of these procedures take different approaches to solving varicose vein problems but they are all very effective depending on your specific varicose veins. Over all varicose veins can have a big impact on your life, but early detection and treatment can easily decrease that impact. With so many Americans suffering from varicose veins the most important thing you can do is to stay informed and to spread the word to others who may not understand the risks.
