July 21, 2012 - PRLog -- (Press Release, July 10, 2012): Projections at the core of the Action Plan for Human Resources Development in Oman, prepared and presented in 2011 byUNWTO" indicate that "Tourism is expected to grow at around 10% a year from 2010-2015 in Oman, over which time the number of tourism jobs will rise from 31,000 to nearly 57,000. This is indicative of the huge untapped potential of Tourism as a vehicle for poverty alleviation. Tourism can be an effective and competent vehicle for economic growth in developing countries. This will also help the local economy integrate with the global economy accelerating the process of globalization. One third of the developing countries have tourism as their main source of foreign exchange.

Tourism can be a great contributor for development and employment creation for the most vulnerable communities. Further more difficult to reach, isolated population pockets are also at times high potential ones from tourism point of view and in that sense tourism could be the great leveler alleviating some of the difficulties of living in difficult places. We in India up till now have not really geared up for tourism. Government has done efforts but they are more of firefighting in nature. The need is to have a cohesive tourism policy with strategy and planning, marketing and promotion, product development, reliable and relevant statistics, comprehensive and transparent regulations, appropriately trained human resources and institutional strengthening all working in sync like an orchestra.

There should also be proper coordination between local communities, local governments, states, and the center. There should be projects which create linkages in-between local micro-enterprises and the big players in the tourism domain e.g., big chains of hotels, suppliers etc. There should be a nodal agency like apex NGOs that compile lists of the products and services which can be of use to the tourists. There can be some product or services which have the active need, some which have a dormant need, and some which have a potential need. After the need assessment there can be training courses specifically designed to meet pocket of tourist interest. There can be tie-ups with the micro financing institutions for seed funding. With this kind of support we can hope to see many entrepreneurs and enhanced quality of products and services in the offering.

To plug the critical gaps in the eco system requires a comprehensive systematic approach that visualizes Tourism in all its varied form as a critical economic as well as social value generative activity that binds communities, adds value to their collective heritage, environment and life practices, and provides them a sustainable economic opportunity, providing unparalleled experiences for tourists and un leasing in the process nation building forces is the thought behind The Other Home.
