Top marks for Education Team at the New Forest National Park Authority

The term has ended and the New Forest National Park Authority Education Team’s end-of-year report is bursting with achievements.

PRLog - Jul. 18, 2012 - The team of two has had a busy year visiting 60 schools and education providers and worked with 8,500 students aged between four and 24.
The year’s highlights include:

-Attending nearly 30 infant and junior school assemblies and teaching approximately 5,000 students about ‘Emily the Alien’ whose home planet was destroyed by litter.

-Introducing a new education session called ‘The Queen’s Larder’ in conjunction with the New Forest Marque for students to learn more about farming and food production in the New Forest.

-Organising the first ever Greener Living Schools Day at Sandy Balls Holiday Centre in Fordingbridge. The team worked with 60 pupils from Arnewood, Burgate, Highcliffe, Hounsdown and Trafalgar schools. The day was designed for students to learn more about the New Forest and what it means to them.

-Helping Ringwood School students take part in ‘Cook for the Queen’, a competition to celebrate The Queen’s Jubilee. Students learnt about the history of food in the New Forest to help inspire them to produce winning menus. Students came up with delicious dishes including brown trout roulade with watercress and horseradish, cake with gorse cordial and wild strawberries, and a forager’s fizz with bog myrtle.

Sue Palma, Education Officer at the New Forest National Park Authority, said: ‘The New Forest National Park is a fantastic education resource which enables learning in every curriculum area for all ages. The amazing diversity of the Forest inspires children to learn about and understand this wonderful place, ensuring that the National Park will be valued and cared for by the adults of tomorrow.’

Leanne Atkinson, fellow Education Officer, added: ‘When we deliver assemblies the students leave determined to make a difference. It is immensely gratifying to see children of all abilities enthused and involved in exploring their environment, often for the first time.

‘We are hard at work preparing education programmes for the new school year and looking forward to another exciting term meeting children in the National Park.’
