MGH Institute Lauds Mass General Hospital for US News & World Report #1 Ranking

Mass General Hospital in Boston - which founded MGH Institute of Health Professions - receives #1 ranking as best hospital in country by US News & World Report

July 18, 2012 - PRLog -- Massachusetts General Hospital – which founded MGH Institute of Health Professions – is now ranked as the Number 1 hospital in the country according to the annual “America’s Best Hospitals” survey by U.S. News & World Report.

“We are thrilled the hospital that created the MGH Institute 35 years ago has received this well-deserved national recognition for its outstanding patient care,” said MGH Institute President Janis P. Bellack, PhD, RN, FAAN. “We are proud to be an MGH affiliate and to benefit from our close relationship with the hospital.”

Many students in nursing, physical therapy, and speech-language pathology who attend the MGH Institute – the only degree-granting affiliate of Partners HealthCare in Boston – complete their clinical rotations at the MGH as part of their education.

For the MGH, it is the first time in the 23-year history of the US News survey the hospital has been named America’s Best Hospital. Last year, the MGH ranked second, just behind Johns Hopkins Hospital, which had topped the list for 21 consecutive years.

“[This recognition] is a tribute to the dedicated men and women who work at the MGH and who make it a remarkable place of healing, caring and hope,” said MGH President Peter Slavin, MD. “We strive to be the best we can be so we can solve these pressing problems and help the millions of patients and families who need us. It is gratifying that our enduring commitment to delivering the highest-quality patient care has been recognized by what is arguably the most renowned and well-established report card on health care. We should take time to celebrate this wonderful accomplishment, but we can’t rest on it. There is too much work left to be done."

With Brigham and Women’s Hospital earning the ninth spot on the list, Boston is the only city in the country with two hospitals listed in the top 10.

Other Partners HealthCare affiliates were cited by U.S. News: McLean Hospital ranked second in psychiatry and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital ranked fifth in rehabilitation. Both North Shore Medical Center and Newton-Wellesley Hospital received regional distinction.

"Today’s recognition is a tribute to our doctors, nurses, researchers, educators and care teams working in our hospitals, our health centers and throughout our community in our local neighborhoods and around the world,” said Partners HealthCare President and CEO Gary Gottlieb, MD. “These accolades reflect what our hospitals have accomplished and what they—and Partners as an overall system—are capable of as we continue to innovate and improve on our commitment to providing affordable access to the highest quality care. “
