PUE: The Facts Behind the Measurement

Anaheim, CA – July 18th, 2012 – Electrorack recently posted its article, PUE: The Facts Behind the Measurement, on its ePulse Info Center at www.electrorack.com.

“Calculating Power Usage Effectiveness is a means for data centers to gauge their energy efficiency,” said Todd Schneider, Electrorack’s Director of Marketing.  “The PUE value can help determine what, if any, improvements to energy efficiency can be made while still maintaining the overall integrity and reliability of the data center.”

Excerpt from PUE: The Facts Behind the Measurement:

PUE set to become global standard

Despite its limitations, The Green Grid announced in 2010 that they would push to make PUE the standard for data center power efficiency similar to the Energy Star rating for household appliances.

Among the partners in The Green Grid’s efforts are the Energy Star Program; the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry; and the European Union’s Joint Research Center Code of Conduct.

Many major IT companies already use PUE to measure data center efficiency. For example, in 2010, Facebook predicted that it would achieve a PUE of 1.15 for its data center in Prineville, Oregon. By April 2011, the site announced that it had achieved a 1.07 PUE rating.

Google, Yahoo, Amazon and many other large players use the metric with Google claiming the best average PUE across all data centers of 1.14.

“Data centers by their very nature generate a tremendous amount of heat, so a significant amount of a company’s energy costs stem from the need to keep the facility cool,” added Todd.  “By calculating a company’s PUE value on a regular basis over time, a company should be able to identify ways to modify their energy consumption and determine whether those changes have resulted in noticeable improvements to energy efficiency.”
