OLYMPIC STYLE SET FOR TEAM SOUTH AFRICA BY DESIGNER LEIGH SCHUBERT
New to US Market, Durban Based Schubert Beats Out 19 Other Top Designers for Opening Ceremony Uniforms
Los Angeles, CA, July 17, 2012 – Leigh Schubert, a Durban based fashion designer who made her US debut last year through distributor BIGCAT Designers, beat out 19 top South African fashion designers in a competition to design the South African Olympic Team’s opening ceremony kit.
“I’m ecstatic. This is an amazing thing for me, as countries around the world have had their opening ceremony outfits designed by the likes of Ralph Lauren for the USA and Stella McCartney for the UK. These are amazing international brands and for me to represent South Africa is incredible,”
The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) unveiled Leigh’s bright, strong design last month. The outfits will be wholly made in South Africa unlike the US team’s uniforms which were made in China.
One of South Africa’s top designers, Schubert’s fashion collections epitomizes sensual femininity while maintaining an urban edge that’s appealing to a broad audience. Her successful US debut last year landed her designs in retailers Treasure & Bond, New York, Holly Hill, San Carlos, CA, Calico Cat, Texas, Cat Walk, Washington DC, and Hula Moon Boutique, Hawaii to name a few. Her newest collection for Resort/Spring 2013 will be exhibited at MODA Las Vegas, a wholesale trade show aimed at retail apparel buyers, from August 21-23.
Schubert is represented by distributor BIGCAT Designers owned by Diane Kalil, a South African entrepreneur who relocated to Los Angeles and created a platform to showcase and promote established South African Fashion Designers in North America.
