Vidant Chowan Hospital Hold Men’s Health Event

Nov. 30, 2012 - PRLog -- Vidant Chowan Hospital held its first-ever men’s health event, “Real Men Know the Facts: A Men’s Health Educational Dinner” on Thursday, June 28th in Edenton to celebrate men’s health month.  A capacity crowd attended the event at Edenton United Methodist Church Family Life Center.  The free occasion was made possible with a grant from the American Cancer Society.  

“Vidant Chowan Hospital is committed to our mission of enhancing the quality of life for the people and communities we serve, touch and support,” said Jeffrey Sackrison, president of Vidant Chowan Hospital.  “Hosting the men’s health event was a wonderful way to help accomplish our mission.  We reach out to the women in the community with breast and heart health events and we decided it was time to include the men, too!  We were honored that Thomas Biggs could join us and share his inspiring story and experience.  Biggs survived prostate, pancreatic and stomach cancer.  His remarks provided a sobering reminder to the attendees that early detection of all cancers, including prostate and colon, is the key to survival.”

Vidant Urology-Edenton, physician Cris Reynolds, MD, talked to the group about some of the recommendations for prostate cancer prevention, detection and treatment.  Surgical oncologist, Timothy Fitzgerald, MD with East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine, gave an informative and entertaining presentation on colon health.
 
Each attendee was given an at-home cancer screening kit, educational materials and a cancer-fighting foods kit with healthy items including fruit, peanuts, a Kashi bar and Bran Flakes.  Albemarle Regional Health Services, Vidant General Surgery – Edenton, Vidant Family Medicine – Edenton and Vidant Urology – Edenton provided information booths for guests to learn more.
