Siemens Hearing Awareness Week 2012

July 16, 2012 - PRLog -- Siemens Medical Instruments (SMI), global provider of medical solutions and the world's largest maker of innovative hearing instruments, will venture to the heartlands once more to raise awareness of hearing health amongst Singaporeans through its annual Hearing Awareness Week.

In its fourth installment this year, the public event will feature a series of educational activities and hearing checks at Nee Soon South Community Club from 21-22 July, and will be graced by Dr Lee Bee Wah, Member of Parliament for Nee Soon GRC, and Mr Jens Papperitz, CEO of SMI in Singapore.

At the event, a key highlight will be the Video-Otoscopy booths, where Siemens volunteers will examine participants’ ear canal and educate them on their ear anatomy, so that anomalies can be detected. Members of the public can also look forward to free hearing screenings, participate in interactive educational talks focused on hearing health, as well as enjoy games and performances that will benefit the whole family. In addition, participants will stand to win attractive prizes through lucky draws such as the latest iPad, Osim neck and shoulder massagers and shopping vouchers.

Frequent exposure to excessively loud noises such as those from motorised tools, automotive engines, and loud music may lead to hearing loss. 40% of Singaporeans diagnosed with hearing loss are younger than 40 years of age, and the figure has doubled in the past eight years. This rate may be higher than reported as many are not aware of the extent of their hearing loss, underlining the importance of early education and prevention.
