Burly Guys Now Offers Free Computer and Electronic Recycling

July 16, 2012—

Burly Guys Junk Removal now offers free pickup of computers and laptops in an effort to reduce e-waste and promote recycling in Southeast Michigan. Consider recycling your old computers to reduce waste and protect the environment.

Most people are familiar with the basics of paper and plastic recycling, but there is a growing need for awareness in computer and electronic recycling. Since the surge of personal computers in the early 1990’s, there has been a need for computer refurbishing and recycling. People and businesses get rid of computers for several reasons, either because they get the blue screen of death or they simply upgrade to a newer model. The question is: what do you do with the old computer?

According to a 2010 CBS News report, 130,000 computers are thrown away every day in the U.S. That number continues to grow as we become more tech savvy, with advancing laptops, desktops, ereaders and iPads. However, the amount of computers being recycled doesn’t correlate with the amount of computers being replaced at this point.

Only 15% of electronic devices are recycled in the U.S. It’s important to increase that percentage. The lead, copper, tin, silicon, iron, aluminum and plastic can all be reused to make new computers. Recycling the aluminum alone is a big deal because it reduces 95% of the energy needed to make new aluminum.

You may be tempted to just throw the old computer away. That isn’t the best decision for the environment, however. If a computer is still in working condition and you just intend on upgrading to a new one, it can be refurbished and donated to a school or business. There are plenty of places who would gladly accept the donation.

A non-working computer isn’t garbage though. Computers need to be dismantled properly for safety reasons. They can’t be put in the landfill because of their toxic features. They contain aluminum, cadmium, chromium, copper, gold, lead, mercury and silver. Some of these items are hazardous materials. They can act as toxins and carcinogens. These toxins present serious health issues. They can cause brain and kidney damage. There is also the risk that they may cause cancer.

At Burly Guys Junk Removal, they pride themselves on recycling as much of the junk as they collect. Recycling computers and electronics is no exception. They believe in the importance of recycling and reusing products whenever possible. In fact, they are now offering to pick up any old computers, laptops, towers, monitors and other electronics for free. Upon pickup, the computer will be properly broken down and safely recycled.

Burly Guys is a junk removal service in Southeast Michigan. They remove everything from hot tubs and swing sets to pianos and appliances in the Metro Detroit area.
