Not yet 21, artist, Kevin Portundo has a realistic sense of "how things should be" and a genuine appreciation for life. With a great head on his shoulders, he possesses wisdom beyond his years...this, combined with some harrowing personal experiences are reflected in some of his pieces. Despite some staggering ups and downs, Kevin Portundo has not "staggered,"
What the artist has to say about his work and influences....
"I've been working on my artistic skills ever since grade school when I wanted to draw Pokemon from the trading cards that were popular at the time. I never knew what artist made the images used on those trading cards but I always had an interest in the way they illustrated these "Pocket Monsters"...my mind began to wonder during boring classes. Math was the first to lose my attention, but I've recently found that I incorporate a large number of geometrical shapes and patterns into my work.
I feel like when I draw I bring this sort of balance to this space I'm taking up. I feel like it goes into a more interesting place if you take the time to really look into it. Everyone seems to see different things in what I draw. I once had a teacher describe my some of my sketches with a Pilot Fine Point pen as "Urban Graffiti" but it's evolved to more of an abstract illustrative form, for lack of better words. My influences come from everywhere. It really would be a lie to tell you I know my real influence. I bounce off reality and make it like swirl if I can. I use a lot of Fine Point pens and pencils. I like to get details. If I could excite every little detail of someone's visual interests I'd be pretty happy with my self. Just making people wonder along paths in their mind they wouldn't otherwise reach."
Kevin Portundo doesn't limit himself to just a few basic colors.."I like the entire spectrum ...I haven't found myself attracted to any specific colors in my artwork. I just use what I have. I tend to stick to using whatever allows me to draw in details." A NYC local, Kevin Portundo has started to implement even more color into his pieces, especially valuing the variety as he collaborates with another local artist with a mutual dedication to art..in addition to projects of his own, he's currently working on a giant, poster-sized freestyle wall mural with this particular local artist.
