Amazon AWS is the leading cloud computing provider with some of the largest companies and internet sites using AWS for their hosting requirements. The strength of their product lies in the ability to up and down size complete environments almost instantly along with their fully maintained applications including Memcache and MySQL for only incremental prices over maintaining these solutions with in-house support staff.
AWS however is a technical based environment and can be daunting for companies who outsource, are looking to move in to new business opportunities or do not have the in-house experience to manage such an environment.
The Vanquish Consulting application stacks are designed to ease the rollout of common applications for environments such as these with a focus on high performance. The stacks are generally built using the Nginx web server, although this does not have as many features as the Apache web server Nginx has been proven to run the core functions 500% faster than Apache, which in turn leads to an enhanced customer and user experience.
One of the decisions Vanquish Consulting took was to not include MySQL in the stacks which is traditionally known as a LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP). Their rationale behind this is “Amazon RDS costs approximately 20% over a similarly configured EC2 base instance where MySQL can be installed. Given that micro MySQL instances are now available and that AWS manages the whole infrastructure including backups, upscaling, multiple zone redundancy, read only replicas and pre-configured MySQL settings automatically we are unable to justify to our clients the costs in maintaining their own MySQL servers.”. Given the problems and experience required in maintaining a technical environment makes this choice suited to the businesses that they are targeting.
The stacks are free for single instance stacks which include all core software and are ready to deploy by anyone who has an Amazon AWS account, Vanquish Consulting have also released paid stacks for web clusters which allows for high performance application web farms using multiple web servers to distribute loads also being configured to run immediately on deployment.
