Indian Doctors help Pak Kids Regain their Eyesight

The two Pakistani kids, blind since birth, have regained their eyesight after a complex RoP surgery by an expert Delhi surgeon. Both the children are in their recuperation phase and are likely to gain complete eyesight within three to six months.

PRLog - Jul. 13, 2012 - CONNAUGHT PLACE, India -- Medical Tourism in India is fast gaining momentum on the international platform especially in third world countries owing to its repeating success stories.  The residents of third world countries are unable to avail advanced medical treatments in First World countries due to high cost factor. The news of two Pakistani children’s regaining vision after suffering from Retinopathy of prematurity disease, caused due to their premature birth, is an indication that India is fast climbing the popularity ladder as the next best medical travel destination.

The best part about India Medical tourism is that the cost of medical treatment here is comparatively low with that of advanced nations. Mohammad Hassan Faisal from Lahore and Syed Mubashir Mehmood from Sukkur, who were diagnosed with RoP due to premature birth, have undergone a successful eye surgery at AIIMS hospital, New Delhi.

"Both the children had almost nil vision. The retina - layer of tissue at the back of the inner eye - had fused and there was tissue scarring. We conducted surgery to detach the tissues and remove the scars," said Dr R V Azad. He also talked about the complications and challenges that arise at the time of surgery as the retina of children is quite delicate and supple.

As per the doctors, both the children will regain their vision within a span of three to six months. While Syed Mubashir Mehmood will get an ambulatory vision, Mohammad Hassan has the prospects of better outcome. But all the doctors are in favor of early detection of the problem. "If a child is detected with ROP within his first month, chances of restoring vision are better. We can give them laser treatment or conduct surgery," said Azad Mehmood's father.

Retinopathy of prematurity surgery is a treatment with high cost and is only available in few SAARC countries. India draws patients from worldwide owing to its world class medical infrastructure. The availability of renowned hospital chains, skilled medical professionals, affordable medical procedures and successful cases like that of Mohammad Hassan Faisal and Syed Mubashir Mehmood is constantly adding in the popularity of Indian medical tourism.
