KIMS HOSPITALS-The Center for Holistic Dentistry has acquired the Core Beam CT Scanner(CBCT)

July 12, 2012 - PRLog -- The major advantage of the Cone Beam scanner is that the X-Ray Radiation exposure to the patient is up 10 times less than a regular CT scanner. Moreover, it is faster and takes about 10 to 40 seconds while a regular CT scanner takes about ten minutes.
The KIMS has imported the scanner from Germany at a cost of over Rs One crore. “The main advantage of CBCT is that it targets the specified areas unlike the conventional scanners. With this, we can pinpoint the finer details of the affected areas,” said Dr M Prasad.
Another key feature of the sophisticated CBCT is that the patient can view the three-dimensional picture of the teeth and get to know the condition of the decayed teeth and the existence of tumours, if any.
Despite being highly sophisticated, the CBCT is cost-effective since its average price is half that of a regular Medical CT scan. The regular Medical CT scanners are large-sized machines mostly available at hospitals and major diagnostic scanning centers while Cone Beam scanners are much smaller in size and mostly available at the clinicians’ office or at dedicated maxillofacial scanning centers.
The benefits of using a CBCT scanner are many. Unlike the regular x-rays, CT scans can discriminate between many types of tissue including bone, teeth, nerves and soft tissue. CT scans are non-invasive and can eliminate the need for exploratory surgery in some cases.
The CT can identify the effects of conditions such as infection and tumors. It is a cost effective tool for imaging a wide range of clinical problems. We can plan accurate treatments for Dental Implants maxillofacial surgery surgeries, etc.  with this equipment
What does the CBCT equipment look like?
Most of the CBCT scanners are square like machines with a chair. The patient sits upright while a C-arm rotates around the head. Within the arm, there is an X-ray source and detector (X-ray receiver) which will make one complete 360° rotation for each scan.
While the arm is rotating, it captures multiple images of the patient’s head from different angles. These images are then reconstructed to create a 3D image of the internal anatomy. Some of the CBCT scanners have the patient lay down on a table that can move up or down, and slide into and out of the center of a hole, while a gantry makes the 360° rotation.


The scan allows the Physician or Dentist to:
•   Visualize internal anatomy that cannot be diagnosed externally
•   Plan treatment and surgery
•   Prepare necessary aids
•   Assess risk
•   Analyze the position and orientation of critical structures, like nerves, teeth roots, previous implants, the sinus and nose

No special preparation is needed for a CBCT scan of the head. The patient should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for CBCT exam. Anything that might interfere with imaging such as earrings, necklaces, piercing, hairpins or eyeglasses should be removed.
