July 11, 2012 - PRLog -- “A koláč (Czech pronunciation: [ˈkolaːtʃ]; diminutive: koláček; plural: koláče), kolač (Serbo-Croatian pronunciation: [ˈkolatʃ]; diminutive: kolačić; plural: kolači); Polish kołacz, known in English variously as kolache or kolace /kɵˈlɑːtʃi/, kolach /ˈkoʊlɑːtʃ/, or kolacky /kɵˈlɑːtʃki/,[1] is a type of pastry that holds a dollop of fruit ,and more  rimmed by a puffy pillow of supple dough.[2] Originating as a semisweet wedding dessert from Central Europe, they have become popular in parts of the United States. The word kolache (колаче) itself means 'a small cookie' in Macedonian”
According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ( someone needs to update that)
The kolache is the next big thing in the fast-food industry case in point is the “kolache factory” and kolache momma’s, just to name two of the fastest growing franchises in 2012
In the USA they are most popular in the southwest centered on Texas and growing fast eastward
Why? They are easy to eat in a car and good alternative to the office donut. A super-fast lunch stuffed with real food. Made with your mom’s best recipes “this is not your mom’s pig in a blanket”
“Long ago, in a corner of the Austro-Hungarian Empire now known as the Czech Republic, Maminka was trying to bake bread, but her daughter, Lebuse, kept interrupting her. So Maminka gave her a piece of dough to play with. Happily, Lebuse rolled and flattened her dough, added some plums from the table, and slipped her creation into the oven with the rest of the bread. When her father came in from the fields for a snack, he grabbed Lebuse’s little cake, which promptly squirted him with scalding plum juice. Crazed with pain, he began hopping around the table in a circle. Lebuse, who found all this very funny, cried out, “Tatinek je do kola!” In other words: “Tatinek is making a wheel!”
And so the kolache—a ball of dough not unlike a slightly sweetish dinner roll filled with fruit or cheese—was born, its name having evolved from the Czech kola, meaning “wheels” or “rounds.” Texans also enjoy the sausage kolaches that resemble pigs-in-a–blanket. Either way, kolaches are as Texan as barbecue, sold anywhere from dedicated kolache bakeries, such as Lone Star Kolaches in Austin, to convenience stores on the Interstate. Houston’s Kolache Factory has actually franchised the kolache, setting up stores as far away as Indianapolis”. The Kolache Word.com history page
Kolaches are trying to work their way to your grocery store but so far that not been that successful.
I think fresh wins here “they aren’t Hot pockets ether” so most of us are really not getting this so the best place to learn about the kolache is “Kolache World”.com
