Photonics & Laser Technology to revolutionize Indian Manufacturing Industry

The world’s leading photonics event LASER World of PHOTONICS to unite the photonics & laser industry in India for the first time in September 2012

July 11, 2012 - PRLog -- Mumbai, India: In recent years, photonics has become a fundamental technology in worldwide manufacturing industry, telecommunication, computing, security and many other applications because of its advantage to work more effectively and with greater speed. The growing numbers of practical applications of photonics make it an important field both for research and commercial development. The development of the photonics & laser technology in India has given the impetus for Messe München International India to launch an exhibition in Mumbai, India for the first time under the event brand “LASER World of PHOTONICS INDIA 2012”.  Photonics, the technology of light energy, is considered to be the technology of the 21st century. It can carry data or information that is equal to 300,000,000 simultaneous telephone calls. Photonics is a sub-discipline of physics that deals with the study of photons, the elementary particle of light which is a result of the fusion of optical technology with electronics. India is a rapidly growing market. The demand for industrial laser and optical systems is increasing with global trends; the photonics industry has great potential. The Indian government has identified ‘Photonics’ as a priority area and has also set up a National Photonics Council. During the Ninth Plan a Photonics development plan was implemented in the areas of optical fibre communication, Bio-photonics, Green Photonics, Special Optical Fibers-PCF (Photonic-crystal Fibers), Optoelectronic Packaging, Nano-photonics, Photonic Crystal Fibres, Polymers for Photonics, Photonics Sensors etc.;

Amongst the applicants of photonics and lasers several industries in India have made notable contributions to this upcoming economy, such as manufacturing, automobiles, jewelry and diamond processing, and sectors such as telecommunications, medical and defense. Owing to tremendous power, flexibility, speed and quality of execution, laser technology has become an irreplaceable tool in modern manufacturing systems, finding utility in thousand of highly varied applications in every section of industry. The potential of growth and application of photonics & lasers in industry sectors like electronics, information technology, science, medical, sheet metal diamond, jewellery processing and automotive manufacturing is believed to be an estimated INR 5000 crore in India.

The application of photonics in life sciences (i.e. biotechnology, microbiology, medicinal sciences, surgery, digital imaging, health care and optics) has helped the Indian industry develop a strong reputation of solving research problems through advanced spectroscopy using lasers, microscopy and fiber optic imaging. It has also been favorably helpful in entertainment & metrology and photonic computing.

Also, Indian research groups at premier institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT, multiple campuses), the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai and various universities are deeply involved in basic and applied aspects of photonics. They have been instrumental to collaborate and provide valuable inputs on a global scale.

The Indian Photonics & Laser industry is still at a nascent stage. It is in need of a major platform for showcasing its scientific and industrial activities. Messe München International India has been keen on developing this unique platform with intangible and commendable contributions by industry and research institutes alike. The potential business prospects that the Indian photonics and laser market holds has lead to the imminent launch of India’s premier photonics and laser event: “LASER World of PHOTONICS INDIA 2012”. It will take place from September 14 until 16 2012 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre (BEC) in Mumbai. The new trade fair will be held on an annual basis. The BEC is India’s largest privately owned trade-fair center in India and the only center of its kind in Mumbai.

This new trade show is a networking opportunity for the various industrial sectors, mainly manufacturing, electronics, processing, communication, medical technology and general lighting sectors in the energy efficient and sustainable use of photonic and laser solutions. The fair will give laser and photonics technology its own national platform and improve its level of recognition in the Indian industry. Additionally it will be a unique opportunity for the photonics and laser industry of India to tap the immense global knowledge and also elevate its global potential.
