Ryan highlights the case of a corporate culture where the practice of gratitude prevails and customer satisfaction increases, while employee and customer turnover decreases. Because of this, she argues, gratitude can directly affect a company’s bottom line profits.
In another example, she provides clinical studies demonstrating that just five minutes of practicing gratitude can significantly boost a person’s immune system for up to six hours, while at the same time stabilizing the heart rate. The practice of appreciation offers positive physical effects.
“I highly recommend this book if you want to be happier, healthier and wealthier. I read this book in one sitting and began implementing some of the ideas the next day. The ideas are easy to implement but powerful in their results.” Jack Canfield, Co-creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series
“Lisa Ryan captivates you with her passion, humor, and enthusiasm for the power of gratitude when you read The Upside of Down Times. Her personal stories, funny anecdotes and insightful research help you find all the reasons to be grateful in life.” John Gray, Ph.D., author of Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus
Ryan provides exercises at the end of each chapter so that readers can start participating immediately in the material they are learning.
She also promotes a more widespread “gratitude movement” for our current society, which she feels would benefit from moving away from feelings of entitlement and dissatisfaction to attitudes of a greater appreciation for life. Ryan demonstrates that practicing gratitude transforms lives and she uses documented research to support her own personal stories and anecdotes of the benefits of appreciation.
