WALLDORF, Germany – As part of their bachelor's thesis, students from the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI), the academic excellence center for IT Systems Engineering, developed a system which allows for the integration and on-demand analysis of Open Data from various public data sources in the Web. The system is based on  the Information Workbench® from fluid Operations®, a customizable platform for the development of Linked Data applications.

On-demand access to Open Data
In this project the Information Workbench integrates and interlinks different publicly available data sources from the Web on a central platform. These data sources represent data in different formats   and include, amongst others, Open Data from the World Bank, the Statistical Office of the European Union and the Federal Statistical Office. The interlinking of e.g. financial, geographic, census and traffic data enables users to run structured queries across different data sources and discover new relationships quickly.

Realizing the Data as a Service (DaaS) paradigm, the Information Workbench allows users to consume the data they need on-demand via an easy to use Self-Service Portal. The Information Workbench allows users to:
• semantically search, analyze, integrate and interlink data scattered across public data sources,
• structure and prepare data according to personal information needs,
• enrich data with local or personal data, and
• visualize and analyze data on-demand.

The Information Workbench provides advanced capabilities for navigation across large data sets, and allows users to trigger individually defined queries and to visualize and analyze query results in various formats, such as bar and pie charts, timeline diagrams, or customized dashboards. In addition, the Information Workbench provides different mash-ups and widgets for visualization, navigation, search and analysis. Widgets show the user relevant information in different formats which are dynamically selected based on the semantics of the data to be visualized. Integrating heterogeneous data sources, the Information Workbench also supports data cleaning.

„Bundesst@ts“ is a first use case for this Open Data project and is available online at http://apps4d.fluidops.net/. It integrates and interlinks Open Data related to education policy in the various German federal states.

With the Open Data project HPI and fluidOps continue their successful cooperation. The partners have worked together for the first time as part of the GovWILD (Government Web Data Integration for Linked Data) project. GovWILD makes public government data transparent and freely available.
