With this awareness on one hand and a realization that Tourism is after all a fun activity, 'The Other Home' organized a painting competition on 'My Idea of Fun', among age groups of 5 to 7 years, 7 to 12 years and above 12 years of age with the winners to be decided by the likes they received on 'The other Home' Facebook page. The idea was to understand from the young citizens of tomorrow as to what would constitute fun and by extension tourism. An overwhelming number of entries were received and it is heartening to note that most of the entries were focused on the themes related to experiencing environment in its pristine glory. As a matter of fact the paintings that won had a strong 'experiential tourism' component to them with environmental sensitivity intertwined with the expression of 'My idea of fun'.
These paintings are shared in our album 'My Idea of Fun Painting Competition' on the Facebook of 'The Other Home'. A video presenting the sequential visual treat of these paintings is also hosted on the Youtube channel at 'My idea of Fun in Summers- Painting Competition'. The proud winners of the competition areAnagha Ghosh and Parth Sanan in 5 to 7 years age category and Sanjana Balla, Vaidehi Jha and Parv Jain in 7 to 12 years age category. The winners in above 12 years age category are Priti Ghosh, Yashvi Jain and Vidya Saubam. The winners go on to create their idea of fun at environmentally beautiful locations with 'The Other Home' The ideas expressed seem to indicate that activities that showcase the rural life, art, culture and heritage of beautiful locations, enabling interaction between the people from different places and animals constitute a more enriching experience. The expressions of fun are multi- faceted and entail farms, nature, adventure, and beautiful experiences such as snoozing or cavorting in beautiful locations.
These expressions of fun are experience oriented, the locations are sparsely populated, depict predominantly natural environment, and mesh with the seasonality and with local events. Devina Dadoo, President Green Brigade at Sanskriti School in Delhi commented on environmentally sensitive ideas of fun echoing the words of Nobel Prize Winner Elinor Ostrom saying that "although the world's land, forests , water and fisheries are finite, it is possible to share them, care for them and enjoy them in a harmonious relationship with nature and with each other creating infinite experiences of joy, worthwhile tourism and a sustainable environment"
