Quantum House Welcomes its 2,500th Guest

July 6, 2012 - PRLog -- Quantum House recently welcomed its 2,500th guest.

Christina Brown, her two-year-old son, mother and sister came to Quantum House after Christina's one-month-old daughter Raeleigh Grace Brown was rushed to St. Mary's Medical Center from their hometown in Okeechobee.

Raeleigh was diagnosed with DiGeorge syndrome, which is a condition prohibiting her organs to finish developing. She needed a specialist the medical center in Okeechobee didn't have.

While Raeleigh was monitored and treated at St. Mary's by pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Michael D. Black and his team, Raeleigh's mother needed somewhere to stay close to her daughter.

Brown had been sleeping in a chair in the hospital for about a month and a half to avoid making the more than an hour-long drive to Okeechobee before she moved into a room at Quantum House.

The House has since welcomed the whole family as Raeleigh grows and is treated.

Being at Quantum House was "almost like being at home," Brown said.  "I had a bed and a kitchen, and people came and cooked. It was really nice."

"Who knew ten years ago we'd be able to serve this many guests?" said Robi Jurney, Quantum House executive director. "With the help of the community, we are able to support so many families during such a difficult time in their lives."

Delia Brown, Raeleigh's grandmother said one of the best things about being at Quantum House is that Christina's almost 2-year-old son Zaine can be near his mom, too.

"At home, he would wake up crying at night looking for his mom," she said. "Even if he is separated from the baby, at least he gets to still see his mom."

In the 11 years Quantum House has been open, it has welcomed families from all over the globe and helped comfort families with all different situations. Its goal has been to be a caring and supportive home that lessens the burden for families whose children are receiving a serious medical condition.
