Silverstone Auctions set for a ‘classic’ sale

July 4, 2012 - PRLog -- Silverstone Auctions has now closed its catalogue for the Silverstone Classic Sale, with 91 cars spanning some 80 years confirmed for the event on 21st July at the home of British motorsport.

In addition to the amazing array of cars on offer, there is almost 50 pieces of automobilia for sale, ensuring the event is set to be one of the highlights of the Silverstone Classic weekend.

The auction has been divided into three distinct categories. Bidding for automobilia starts at 12pm, classic and road cars at 2pm, with race and competition models following at 4pm.

Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions, said: “Befitting the world’s largest classic motor racing festival, we have secured a fine mix of cars, many with competition winning credentials.

“However, there’s also a wide variety of road going models spanning eight decades, many of these modern classics, ideally suited for weekend motoring, and others whose timeless elegance will be sure to turn heads wherever they go.”

Race car highlights include two rare and stunning models from 1953. One is a Cooper Bristol Historic Grand Prix car, estimated at £140,000 to £160,000, while the other is a Connaught AL10, perhaps the most beautiful British Grand Prix car of all time, estimated at £250,000 to £300,000.

More modern Formula One offerings include a 1979 McLaren M28, estimated at £200,000 to £220,000, a 1983 Theodore, estimated at £120,000 to £135,000, and an ex-Michael Schumacher 1992 Benetton B192-02, estimated at between £175,000 to £200,000.

Meanwhile, there’s also three Frank Sytner owned single-seater race cars from the 1970’s representing Formula’s One, Two and Three, which have recently returned from the prestigious Historic Grand Prix of Monaco event.

Not to be outdone is the collection of road going cars, including 11 Jaguars and four Ferraris. Other notable classics include a 1960 Austin Seven 850, with just 2,600 miles on the clock, estimated at £20,000 to £25,000, a rare 1967 TVR Tuscan V8, estimated at £40,000 to £50,000, and a 1975 Jensen Interceptor Series III convertible, estimated at £60,000 to £75,000.

The automobilia collection is also impressive, with paintings, books and medals, up for auction.

However, perhaps most noticeable are the seven crash helmets on offer, none more so than one worn in 1994 by legendary three-time Formula One World Champion Ayrton Senna in a Williams test session.

Viewing takes place in ‘The Wing’ building at Silverstone on Friday 20th July from 9.30am to 7.30pm and from 9am on Saturday 21st. All lots can also be viewed online at www.silverstoneauctions.com.
