Senator Gravel became nationally known for his forceful but unsuccessful attempts to end the draft during the Vietnam War and for putting the Pentagon Papers into the public record in 1971 at risk to himself.
Gravel, to the dismay of Democrats, was one of only 2 US Senators to oppose then President Johnson's Gulf of Tonkin resolution and the first to introduce normalizing relations with China before it's proposal by President Nixon.
