July 2, 2012 - PRLog -- Tom Hess, guitar player in symphonic metal band Rhapsody Of Fire and international leader in online guitar instruction has created an online resource to help guitarists learn how to teach guitar lessons and become successful guitar teachers.

Many new guitar teachers struggle to find new guitar students because their local area is dominated by one or two competing teachers who quickly gain control over any potential prospects. As a result, less experienced guitar teachers often end up teaching significantly less students. In his online resource, Hess explains this in detail with several statistics:

All stats are taken from http://tomhess.net:

“93% of guitar teachers in the United States have reported that they work an additional job to support themselves due to low teaching income.

90% of all electric guitar teachers in the United States have not purchased instructional material to help them teach guitar lessons.

91% of guitar teachers in the United States have not been trained formally, coached or mentored to teach guitar effectively.”

He continues with his remarks on these stats:

“The very small percentage of guitar teachers who are in high demand are the ones who actively seek to improve their guitar teaching skills through professional training. The other overwhelming majority of guitar teachers barely make enough money to get by, and usually have to work an additional full time job just to pay the bills.” He continues, “The truth is that getting trained to improve as a guitar teacher is in both your best interest and the best interest of your current and future students. There are many guitar teachers out there who advertise themselves as ‘the best’, but in reality are not truly qualified to teach guitar. As a result, their guitar teaching business suffers greatly in the long term because they simply do not get any real results for their students. Then, before they know it, they have built a bad reputation for themselves and must either relocate to start over or work in a different industry altogether.”

In his online guitar teaching resource, Hess discusses many of the problems that guitar teachers face and how to overcome them in order to build a successful and profitable guitar teaching business. One of these common problems discussed includes the topic of “how to teach beginner guitar students.”

Hess explains his thoughts: “Beginner guitar students are the most common type of student that you will see as a guitar instructor. If you want to build a successful guitar teaching business, you must become effective at teaching these students.” He goes on: “Many guitar teachers are under the false impression that teaching beginners is easy. In reality, the total opposite is true. In most cases, beginning guitar students are more difficult to teach than any other type. Since most guitar teachers do not understand how to teach these students, they frequently lose them after only several sessions together. Although there exist many potential solutions to this issue, the first thing that guitar teachers need to do is avoid teaching beginners in a linear fashion.”
