            New Book Details Lives and Deeds Of Many Fascinating Characters

   KERNERSVILLE, N.C. -  The charm and charisma that characterize California is brought to vivid life in California Mystique, a new book by Jack Adler which depicts the lives and deeds of many fascinating personalities that exemplify the state’s colorful history.
   The annals of California include a bevy of adventurers, poets, politicians, bandits and assorted other personalities. The state, now and as before, continues to be a worldwide lure for visitors. This book delves into California’s mystique and what has always marked the state as one of the great beacons of the U.S. and the world at large.
   Among the many fascinating characters are Sam Brannan, California’s first millionaire; Joaquin Murieta, bandit/folk hero; Thomas Oliver Larkin, a secret agent;
Lola Montez, would-be “Queen of California,”, and Captain Jack and the Modoc War.
   Similarly, other personalities whose deeds have enriched California include Jedediah Strong Smith, frontiersman; Agoston Haraszthy and the “Wine Rush”;  “Snowshoe Thompson, a skiing pioneer;  Ah Louis and the “Potato King” and the “Rice King,” Luther Burbank, a plant creator; John Muir, a determined naturalist; and Hubert Howe Bancroft, an unusual historian.
                    Among the writers depicted are Henry George , the economist and progress seeker; Joaquin Miller, a literary frontiersman; and Ambrose Bierce, a cynic for the ages.
Other writers, showing California’s rich literary history, take in Bret Harte, Jack London, Robinson Jeffers, Upton Sinclair, John Steinbeck, and William Saroyan. Related artists include Charlie Chaplin, Walt Disney, and Isadora Duncan, the famed dancer.
   Politicians embrace Leland Stanford, a grocer and governor; Hiram Johnson, opponent of railroad domination; Earl Warren, protector of rights; and such more contemporary figures as presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. Other figures: William Randolph Hearst, a castle and war-maker; James Swinnerton and comic strips; Jonas Salk and polio; and Cesar Chavez of “It Can Be Done” fame.
   Many photos embellish the text which also includes a map as well as a rundown of key memorabilia sites for each person.
   Adler, a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, has lived in California for many years. Several other nonfiction books, as well as novels, have been published.
