Survey Finds Discrepancy Between Sales and Marketing In Remote Access and File-Sharing Use

PRLog (Press Release) - Jul. 2, 2012 - London – July 2, 2012 SkyDox, a leading provider of cloud-enabled file sharing, file synchronization, file storage, and collaboration tools, released today the results of a survey highlighting differences in remote access needs, and in the use of unsanctioned file-sharing tools between sales and marketing employees. Fifty-three percent of marketing employees notify their IT departments when using free file-sharing platforms for business use, as opposed to only 29 percent of sales employees.

The glaring 24 percent discrepancy, the results of which were found by surveying more than 1,900 sales and marketing employees across a wide array of industries, including healthcare, financial services and government, among others, highlights major trends in modern day job requirements, such as the prevalence of bring-your-own-device (BYOD) office cultures and remote access needs.

“As sales departments grow increasingly mobile, they also become more detached from their office, and therefore may grow less aware of office protocols and security best practices when choosing solutions to better enable their performance,” said Ali Moinuddin, CMO, SkyDox. “This ‘by whatever means necessary’ attitude can lead to relying on tools not necessarily sanctioned or approved by IT.”

The survey found that 88 percent of sales employees use their mobile device or tablet for work purposes, whereas only 70 percent of marketing employees indicate the same. However, 97 percent of marketing employees say they need remote access in order perform their job, a 27 percent higher response than sales.

“It should be noted that 8 percent more sales employees indicated a need to use their own device than a need to remotely access their corporate server,” said Moinuddin. “Meanwhile, the opposite is true for marketing employees, by 17 percent. Presumably, sales employees are using their mobile devices to make calls, whereas marketing needs remote access to work on projects not easily manipulated on smartphones or tablets, such as presentations or creative documents.”

This survey, conducted April 16-30, 2012, was prompted by a webinar conducted jointly with SkyDox and AIIM, a global association of information professionals, that explored similar trends of BYOD, mobility, free file-sharing and IT oversight.
