By: Dave Worthams (87th President Michigan Jaycees) "I am so proud of the accomplishments of all of our chapters in Michigan," said Dave Worthams, 87th Michigan Jaycees President who led the organization in 2011. "When the Jaycees talk about building leaders in young professionals, this is what we envision: young people, who are active in their communities, working together to improve the quality of life around them." Topping the list of achievements is the Greater Muskegon Jaycees who received the Harold A. Marks Memorial Award for being the best chapter in the entire nation. This marks the second year in a row that a Michigan Jaycee chapter has been named the best in the nation (the Wyandotte Jaycees received the award last year) and fourth in the last 20 years. For the 4th straight year, the Michigan Jaycees were named the top fundraising state for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life program, a partnership that the Jaycees have been involved with for many years. Collectively, Michigan Jaycee chapters raised over $37,000 to support cancer research. In addition, many Michigan Jaycee chapters were also recognized for excellent projects, including: • The Kalamazoo Jaycees for best International Involvement Project (From Castles to Highlands: An evening of Scottish culture & history) • The Grand Rapids Jaycees for best Public Relations Project (Art Van Santa Parade) • The Ludington Area Jaycees for Best Individual Development Project (From IPA to Stout: A Flight of Beer) • The Lansing Area Jaycees for Best Youth Involvement Project (Easter Egg Hunt) Chapters were also recognized for excellent overall programming, including: • The Greater Muskegon Jaycees for best Individual Development & International Involvement Programming • The Lansing Area Jaycees for best Community Service Programming Over 700 chapters were reviewed for their efforts, and two Michigan Jaycees Chapters received the Clarence H. Howard Memorial Awards for being the best in their chapter division, including: • The Kalamazoo Jaycees were named 1st Place in Division 5 • The Greater Muskegon Jaycees were named 1st Place in Division 6 A full list of the award winners from Michigan can be found below. "What was accomplished in 2011 is only just the beginning," Worthams concluded. "Our partnership with the Michigan Community Service Commission and Michigan AmeriCorps that is starting to kick off in 2012 will empower young leaders and professionals all across the state to do even more. It is a great day to be a Michigan Jaycee!" The Michigan Jaycees is a statewide group of 21- to 40-year-olds who focus on developing leadership skills through community involvement, with chapters in over 35 communities in Michigan.
