July 2, 2012 - PRLog -- The first person to discover dental implants is said to be a Swedish orthopedic surgeon who had been doing research on bone healing and regeneration. Using a titanium plate, he discovered that this material allows the bone to grow in a large proximity compared to the other metals he had used. The first dentist who placed dental implant as we know today is Dr. Leonard Linkow in 1952, only couple of months after he graduated dental school. Thanks to these scientists and doctors, today we have more possibilities in dental rehabilitation.

In the past 10 years there have been many improvements and changes in dentistry overall. The most significant relates to dental implants that have revolutionized many procedures and planning in dentistry and have opened up new possibilities. Now, there are more programs and courses for the training of the dentists who want to do implantology in their practice, especially in well developed countries.

However, even though the procedure in implantology didn't change that much, the material of the implant itsself has become more improved. Since implants are made from titanium alloy (titanium has proven to be the material of choice, since the body rarely rejects this implant and the allergic reactions to this material are very rare),they have been improved by adding other elements that will increase the qualities of the titanium and have been shaped in the way to resemble tooth's root and for the better bone osseointegration. This is now possible because of new coating technologies that have made implants to be more stable and resistant in the bone.

Also, new designs help implant to be more flexibile and use the bone effectively. The main goal in designing new implant and changing them is better and faster osseointegration so the healing process doesn't last long and that the complete rehabilitation of the dental status can be done in a short time. With that possibility you don't have to wait a long time for your missing tooth to be replaced, wear a temporary cap for the time the implant heals and the final outcome is more successful. When dental implantology started, there were lots of failures in osseointegration of the implants, the healing proccess took a long time, and the surgical procedure was more invasive than it is nowadays.

Considering the price range, 10 years ago prices were very high and only celebrities and rich people were able to have dental implants. Now, the price range has changed making dental implants available for just about anyone on the market.
At the Dental Implants Academy dental implants start from £650 which is a fraction of the cost they would have been 10 years ago. This is down to advances in technology which now allow for computer planning, where models are digitally replicated. This reduces the number of required patient visits by 65%.
