July 14, 2012 - PRLog -- Grand Junction, Colorado – IntelliTec College’s Student Ambassadors Club donated time and money to fight against AIDS at the “Swinging at AIDS” golf tournament in May at the Adobe Creek National Golf Course in Fruita, Colorado. The tournament raised about $17,000 this year and will be used to support many AIDS-afflicted children in Kenya for one year, as well as contribute funds to WestCAP, the local non-profit supporting victims of the disease on the Western Slope.

This year the tournament was presented by the Center for the Church and Global AIDS. Approximately 68 golfers took part in the fundraiser, most of which were residents of Grand Junction. IntelliTec students sponsored a $150 golf course hole, which is sufficient to care for one orphan for an entire year. Two students also volunteered by setting up a silent auction, selling tickets for an event drawing and filling goodie bags for golfers. Three staff members donated cash to the event as well.

Events like this show worth with their staying power. “Two years ago this same event raised enough money to ship a container of $400,000 worth of medical supplies to the Maua Hospital in Kenya,” says IntelliTec College Instructor Ruth Mitchell.

After the tournament, IntelliTec volunteers reported having a rewarding experience and meeting a lot of really nice people. Though this is the first time IntelliTec College has sponsored a fundraiser of this kind, it won’t be the last. Mitchell says “I'm hoping perhaps next year we might see some IntelliTec students or staff golfing also.”

The Student Ambassadors Club showed interest in this particular cause after a new class was introduced into school curriculum in which service projects were discussed. Dean of Students Shelby Maloney explains the IntelliTec College Student Ambassadors Club as “approximately 18 community-minded students whose GPA is at least a 3.5 and who maintain 90% attendance. They serve as campus leaders, mentors and tutors, and each term they select various community outreach events and nonprofit organizations to support.”

The students will continue to focus their charitable efforts on worthy causes around the community as they move forward in the year. Any organization who wishes to be included in these efforts should contact IntelliTec College of Grand Junction for more information.
