“I am a person of color who was born in 1943 in Southeast Louisiana. I was born as my parents and their parents before them were, into the world of Jim Crow's separate and unequal society. I was raised in a world where colored folks were considered less than human beings. It was the law of the land, a land where people weren't judged based upon the content of their character, but on the color of their skin.

“Coloreds and whites were required to live in separate neighborhoods, and attend separate schools and churches. My father worked on a plantation from the age of 12 years old. He worked from sunup to sundown in the fields and maintained a family garden to supplement the family.

“I was required to attend a Jim Crow dog house school in the middle of a sugar cane field, the same school my parents and other colored folks had to attend when they were children. The school was geared to keep us at the lowest level of competitiveness. At an early age, I concluded that I had to find my own means of surviving in the world of Jim Crow's separate and unequal society. I decided to leave and begin my journey on the road of life.”
