June 28, 2012 - PRLog -- Acupuncture was introduced to most Americans by a 1971 New York Times article by James Reston.  While traveling with Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in preparation for President Nixon’s first trip to China, Reston fell ill and required an emergency appendectomy.  To relieve his pain, doctors used acupuncture, and upon his return Reston was so intrigued and impressed with his treatment that he wrote about it for the New York Times.   Since that introduction, Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (which includes the use of herbs, massage, diet, and Qi Gong) have seen an explosion in use and recognition, most notably for its ability to reduce pain and speed the healing process. In addition to pain management, acupuncture is showing benefits for many other medical conditions, such as women’s health. Increased function has led to increased providers and patients who would have previously relied solely on Western Medicine; now actively seek additional answers from Acupuncture and Eastern Medicine.  Acupuncture and eastern medicine have even breached the pinnacle of western acceptance, by being covered by certain health insurance plans. This integration of east and west is an approach being adopted by an increasing number of providers.  Megan Joyce, owner of Joyce Wellness in Huntington Beach, specializes in treating women’s health issues, in particular, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Her unique approach to treating PCOS integrates Chinese medicine, neutraceuticals, and western medical philosophy to create a comprehensive treatment plan specifically catered to each individual. Joyce provides nutritional counseling and acupuncture treatments, which has proven to be very effective in reducing PCOS symptoms among her patients.

Megan Joyce utilizes her skills as both an acupuncturist and an herbalist to help patients at Joyce Wellness overcome a variety of ailments including women’s health.  Prior to opening Joyce Wellness in January of 2011, Ms. Joyce spent time as an acupuncturist in Los Angeles at UCLA’s Arthur Ashe Medical Center and the Simms/ Mann Venice Family Clinic. She received advanced training in Gynecology and Internal Medicine at Zhejiang Traditional Chinese Medicine University.  She also introduced the beneficial effects of Oriental Medicine to patients in Peru, Ecuador, and Honduras.  In addition to her work at Joyce Wellness, Megan Joyce is also the co-founder of the One World Health Project (http://www.owhp.org/), a non-profit dedicated to providing acupuncture and herbal medicine to developing countries.
