The Union County Public Education Foundation’s second largest gift to date was recently received from Resolute Forest Products, Catawba Operations in Catawba, SC. In making the gift, Resolute Human Resources Coordinator Tracy R. Wimmer stated, "We value the importance of education at Resolute Forest Products. It is our hope that our donation will be used to improve educational opportunities for students throughout the Union County School District."
The $1,500 contribution marks the first business or corporate gift the Foundation has received since its founding in July of 2011. "It is especially rewarding to us that a company located not only outside of Union County, but in another state recognizes the importance of private sector support of public education and supporting organizations in communities where they do business and many of their employee families reside," Foundation Executive Director Dick Baker said.
To date, the local education foundation has not received any financial support from any Union County business or industry. The organization has raised approximately $16,000 since its inception – all from individual gifts and fundraising events. Baker said a number of conversations and initial meetings have been held with several of Union County’s major employers and key business leaders, but none have stepped forward with financial support as yet. He stated that continued outreach, engagement and cultivation of area business and industry investment is the organization’
s top priority. “Business and industry support is the key to our success in growing an endowment for the future,” Baker said. “By investing in education, the business community is making a statement that well-funded educational programs and schools are vital to the economic growth of the county as well as providing a tangible benefit to their customers and employees. I hope Resolute Forest Products investment in our mission will be an example to all Union County business and industry to join with them in support of our efforts," he added.
