Somerset architectural practice picks up Gold at the Green Apple Awards 2012

O2i Design Ltd, a family-run Somerset practice, specialising in sustainable architecture, is thrilled to win one of the acclaimed Green Apple awards for their work in the Built Environment & Architectural Heritage Category.

June 28, 2012 - PRLog -- The Green Apple Awards are at the vanguard of environmental and sustainable best practice for the built environment and recognise projects that have made a positive impact in architecture, landscape architecture, preservation and civil engineering.

The Awards, held on 25th June in London were open to everyone, from individuals to international conglomerates and the high standard of entries to this year’s Built Environment & Architectural Heritage Awards shows that organisations are increasingly placing sustainability high on their corporate agenda.  Now in their 16th year, the annual Green Apple Awards received hundreds of entries from the UK and further afield.

O2i Design ltd was selected for one of their recent small commercial, sustainable project.  The Somerset firm was thrilled to have been nominated in this national Award and proud that their work can be represented on this national platform, winning a Gold Award.

O2i Design’s project was a sustainable refurbishment of a workshop that sits on an agricultural site, surrounded by wetlands.  Sustainability was key to the success of this project and special attention was paid to the project’s environmental impact.

Somerset businessman Ben Horne and partner Charlie Morgan run their business from the workshop and are delighted that the sustainable ethos which runs through their furniture and textile business ‘Shanti Living Ltd’ is now present in their new business premises too.

The workshop was designed to have minimal environmental impact, using highly insulated glazing, recycled materials and a reed bed water treatment system to achieve this.  The scheme uses local materials such as blue lias stone, hydraulic lime render and mortar, oak, as well as high-tech glazing, blended with modern, innovative, green materials such as high grade, self-finished Oriented Strand Board.

Duncan Pyle, Managing Director of O2i Design Ltd added “We are so pleased that this unusual, commercial rural project has been recognised for its sustainable credentials.  It is a real achievement by the owner to have gone that extra mile by ensuring that the project was as green as possible. The whole team is thrilled to have won this prestigious accolade”.
