June 27, 2012 - PRLog -- Princess Yachts, the expanding luxury yacht maker, are using freestanding Goliath cranes from Street Crane Company to produce their new 30 to 40 metre M Class tri-deck yachts.  The cranes, installed at the historic South Yard of the Devonport Dockyard, will allow large fabrications to be lifted, transported and accurately placed as the yachts are fitted out.

There are three cranes in use.  The main manufacturing area is serviced by two mirror image Goliath cranes of 16 tonnes safe working load, each spanning 13.75 metres.  These cranes have twin hoists of eight tonnes lifting capacity that can be used independently or together to give maximum load flexibility.  A 28 metres span Goliath crane with hook coverage over the whole assembly area has a single 16 tonne hoist and will share the outer running rail of the smaller Goliaths.

The assembly area is protected by a lightweight space frame building. The innovative enclosure covering the assembly bays has insufficient strength to accommodate conventional overhead cranes and freestanding gantries within the structure would have occupied valuable manufacturing space.  Street Crane recommended floor running Goliath cranes, using a slim leg design to maximise hook coverage over the manufacturing area.

Street Crane’s UK manufactured ZX hoists are used throughout.  These assure true vertical lift and fall and with the high positional accuracy needed to protect fabrications and components from damage by lateral movement.  For safety, warning beacons, alarms and an automated anti-collision system are installed on all the equipment.  Wire free radio controls allow crane operators to select a position to maximise their visibility and safety.  Pendant controls provide a back-up means of operation when required.

Cranes from Street Crane are used at all Princess manufacturing sites.  These are mainly conventional overhead cranes or Goliaths.  However where site specific difficulties required special engineering, Street Crane has risen to the challenge installing in one location cranes with hinged crane bridges to suit exceptionally wide-span assembly bays, a solution commonly used in the aviation industry.

The company’s cranes are used by all the major UK luxury yacht and sports boat manufacturers.  In addition, they are used in marine shipyards, in submarine assembly, naval dockyards and by offshore platform builders.  Engineering and fabrication companies that support the marine and ship repair industry are also extensive users of Street’s cranes and hoists.
