Death on Illampu

Marc owns a gold mine near the Beni River in the dense jungles of Bolivia, the home of lovely orchids and exotic birds. It is also home to the jaguar, the venomous bushmaster and the fer-de-lance.

He hires a doctor to oversee his clinic after an Indian worker from a small town on the slopes of Illampu is killed by a fer-de-lance.

A love affair develops between Marc and Val, the beautiful but unhappy wife of the doctor, an affair consummated on the Island of the Sun on Lake Titicaca, as politicians and secret police in La Paz conspire to take the immensely profitable mine for themselves.
Realizing that they need more technical information before they take over the mine, they set Aurora de Cadiz, a beautiful actress and mistress of the Minister of Finance, the task of securing the information by seducing Marc's childhood friend and partner.

In the final chapters, Marc's small plane is forced down by army fighters, and after his escape from jail he races to the slopes of Illampu in search of Val.
