“When I was in eighth grade, I was dropped during a cheerleading stunt. I lost feeling in my arms and blacked out. The doctors did X-rays and discovered nothing was broken, but I had pretty severe scoliosis. If I hadn’t fallen like that, they may not have discovered it right away,” Osborn said.
After her diagnosis, Osborn was referred to a scoliosis specialist at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, where she began treatment. She had to wear a back brace and was warned that she might eventually need spinal surgery. To increase her range of motion and eliminate the need for surgery, Osborn began implementing additional healing programs, including massage therapy, which she receives at Massage Envy in Carrollton.
“Massage therapy has been an important part of my life. Scoliosis limits my flexibility and gives me chronic back pain. Massage is a huge part of how I’m able to ‘treat’ that,” explained Osborn. “I also do strength training and hot yoga. Through a combination of these things, I’ve been able to retain movement and avoid spinal fusion surgery.”
Osborn says she goes to Massage Envy “because of the great price.” Introductory, one-hour massage sessions (a 50-minute massage and time for consultation and dressing) are $49. Memberships are available for $59 per month and include a one-hour massage session, with unlimited additional sessions for $39.
“Massage therapy is great for chronic illnesses like Karley’s, as well as situations that we can all relate to, like relieving stress and staying healthy,” said Kimberly Marzett, franchise owner of the Massage Envy Carrollton.
Osborn adds that massage therapy helps relax her muscles, and she plans to visit Massage Envy before competing for the Miss Texas title next month.
“For my talent, I’ll be performing a jazz dance to “Too Darn Hot” by Ella Fitzgerald. I began dancing when I was two, and I’ve always loved it. I believe I’m still moving and still dancing because of the efforts I’ve taken to retain flexibility through things like hot yoga and massage,” said Osborn. “I’d absolutely recommend it to others.”
The 2012 Miss Texas competition will be held at the Allen Convention Center July 4-7. According to the Miss Texas website, more than 12,000 women participate in the city and state events leading up to the Miss America competition each year. Osborn says it would be extremely exciting to win, but she is also excited about helping people, something she says the competition has enabled her to do on a larger scale.
“I’ve been volunteering at Scottish Rite every Wednesday for the past several months, and having that little crown on my head has made such a big difference to the kids. For them, it’s a beacon of hope. They always tell me, ‘you look so normal!’ It’s just such a blessing to be able to bring them that. The Miss Texas program provides me with an opportunity to spread hope to an even wider audience – the message that they too can overcome obstacles and adversities,”
Osborn was crowned Miss Twin Rivers in Texarkana in January 2012. The title is a new designation that’s open to women ages 17-24, statewide. Although she competed in Texarkana, Osborn’s Twin Rivers title also allows her to be actively involved in the Dallas/Fort Worth area – something Osborn is excited about because it means she can make a difference all over the Metroplex.
As Miss Twin Rivers, Osborn has spoken to elementary and secondary students in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and she plans to share her platform ‘emBRACE: Accepting Adversity, Overcoming Obstacles’ statewide if she’s crowned Miss Texas. Among other projects, she also hosted a spring fling for almost 2,000 seniors, helped raise funds for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, visited with children who were admitted to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, volunteered at the Special Olympics and ran in a 5K race benefitting the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
“One of the most fun events was the Race for Wishes, a 5K race benefitting the Make-A-Wish Foundation. I wore my crown during the race because it’s become a symbol of hope. That crown has allowed me to help a lot of people, and I’m so thankful for that,” said Osborn.
