Starting at The Bull in Highgate and passing through other aptly-named pubs such as The Spaniards Inn, The Old Bull & Bush, The Bull and Last and The Bull & Gate, the route takes in the historic and scenic highlights of the most beautiful part of the best city in the world.
This free event styles itself loosely on the Running of the Bulls at the Festival of San Fermin in Pamplona – made infamous by Ernest Hemingway in The Sun Also Rises – in which bulls charge through the streets while the townspeople show off their machismo by running in front of them, prancing, taunting and ultimately getting painfully trampled and kebabbed.
“We’ve taken this concept and given it a typically British twist”, says event organiser James Small. “In keeping with the proud tradition of bizarre and barmy sports like cheese rolling, bog snorkelling and toe-wrestling, we’ve replaced the competitiveness, danger and bravado of the Spanish event with beer, eccentricity and jolly good fun.”
With so much media attention on mainstream sports in London this summer, this offbeat experience will be the perfect remedy for Olympics fatigue.
