Smith & Nephew Recal Metal Liner Component

June 22, 2012 - PRLog -- Medical device manufacturer, Smith & Nephew as of June 1st, 2012 have recalled its ‘Optional metal liner component of its R3 acetibular system’, a metal hip replacement system. An adversely high number of medical side effects led to Smith & Nephew initiating the recall. 2007 was when the metal liner was first introduced to the marketplace and global sales began in 2009. Smith & Nephew’s hip replacement system has been installed in over 7,500 patients, who are now affected by the recall and the negative side effects.

The optional metal liner component was used in the total hip replacements.

Smith & Nephew released this statement regarding the recall:

"We regularly review the effectiveness of our products and are not satisfied with the clinical results of this component."

Recorded side effects from patient include; infections, dislocations and fractures.

This raises concerns about all metal on metal hip replacement devices both their effectiveness and their safety.
