Members Say Club “Saves Their Life” by Keeping Them Social and Active
MODESTO - - Twenty-five years ago, filmmaker John Hughes showed the world that teenagers could find solace and inspiration in a movie called “The Breakfast Club.” Today, a group of Modesto seniors who met at CareMore’s Nifty After Fifty senior fitness center, are resurrecting the “breakfast club” genre, and they say it’s a life saver.
Jennifer Spankowski, a coach at Nifty After Fifty, and Linda Van Artsdalen, a sales representative for CareMore Health Plan, noticed that the group was special in the way they encouraged other seniors – in some cases total strangers – to join them.
“This group literally saved my life after my wife passed away,” said Breakfast Club member Harold. “I was just sitting at home sad and depressed and had no reason to get out of the house. Now I can't wait for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday!”
The group’s “unofficial leader” George—an active senior who works out at the Nifty After Fifty in Modesto-- is excited to bring in new members to their “Breakfast Club.” It began with a few gym-goers casually going to breakfast together after their work out and now it has become a group of more than a dozen strong, passionate seniors coming together to socialize and keep each other active and healthy.
“When I moved to Stanislaus County from Texas after retiring, I figured I would be bored because I didn't know anybody,” said George. “I have met so many friends, and am so busy now. I do Tai-Chi, yoga and other activities, and now the days just fly by!"
CareMore and Nifty After Fifty employees were excited to see this group encouraging other seniors to be more active and social. The primary philosophy for the health plan and the fitness center collaboration is to ensure senior wellness, not only in the medical sense, but in the physical, social and emotional sense.
“We provide not only quality senior health care for older adults, but also an environment where they can thrive physically and build relationships,”
