"Book publishing is changing quickly," Guentert said. "Ebook and print-on-demand technologies have made book publishing less risky and more accessible to self-publishers. But you still have to market your book, and rookie authors tend to be at a loss because you can't do so through bookstores."
Guentert says that authors need to have marketing in mind before they even write their books. "I teach authors to start with their readers, a new idea for most of them." He wants authors to define their topic in a way that "changes your core reader's life," a concept he says he learned from business strategist Peter Drucker. "If your book changes someone's life, you're going to be able to sell it. It can be a small change, but that small change has to be worth more than the price of the book."
Guentert wants self-publishers to think like smart traditional publishers, mapping out a book—its content, its physical shape, its cost and pricing—before they decide to go ahead with the project. He includes three worksheets in the back of the book to help authors do this.
