New Jersey Assigns CEUs to Critical Moments Medical Emergency Classes

New Jersey dentists and their staffs can earn CEUs while preparing for medical emergencies in their offices by taking classes from Critical Moments.

PRLog - Jun. 20, 2012 - FLANDERS, N.J. -- FLANDERS, N.J. – Preparing to handle medical emergencies in the dental office is now worth continuing education units from the state of New Jersey when the preparation includes classes from Critical Moments ( http://www.criticalmoments.biz ), a Flanders-based company started by a paramedic familiar with dental office operations.

The New Jersey Dental Board has granted two credits to dentists, hygienists and assistants who take Critical Moments: Preparing for Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office. The training company also earned permission to award CEUs for CPR classes taught in the dental office, said Doug Fenichel, MICP, president of Critical Moments.

"Our Critical Moments class teaches dentists and their staffs to recognize and react to unexpected medical events in the office," said Fenichel. "It's different from other medical emergencies classes because it's a realistic approach to what should be done until EMS arrives. It takes a team approach to incidents, and it’s taught in the context of the individual dental office. The class also recognizes the impact a serious emergency can have on the staff, patients and others."

Fenichel created Critical Moments by combining his 20 years of service as a paramedic and firefighter with what he knows about dental offices. His wife, Karen, is a successful Morris County general dentist. The class, Critical Moments: Preparing for Medical Emergencies is the evolution of what he set up for her when she established her practice more than 10 years ago.

“Most dentists I know work hard to make sure they are delivering the best care to their patients,” said the Critical Moments founder. “But too many medical, dental and allied health offices aren’t ready for medical emergencies. Nobody wants to see an emergency happen, but it will. That’s when uncompromising care is, perhaps, most important. Being prepared is the first step in continuing the delivery of top-quality care to a sick patient.”

Critical Moments offers two classes, both of which have been authorized for continuing education units:

•   Critical Moments: Preparing for Medical Emergencies in the Office is a two-hour class set up to be done in one sitting or over two staff meetings. It explains what a medical emergency is, talks about how to react and offers the dental team a chance to talk through emergencies. Before the class, Fenichel meets with the dentist and practice manager to talk about prevention and preparation tactics. The class is worth two CEUs.

•   Cardiopulmonary resuscitation/AED Use: Critical Moments teaches American Heart Association CPR and recommends the Healthcare Provider Class. This is a four-hour class. Those who complete the class get a provider card good for two years and four CEUs.

In addition to the classes, Critical Moments sells automatic defibrillators from Cardiac Science.

“The defibrillators from Cardiac Science offer value and easy maintenance,” said Fenichel. “But most importantly, to me, they offer the therapeutic shocks most similar to what we use on the paramedic units and in the emergency rooms.”
