This will be the key message from the European Ocean Energy Association at its third annual conference, Ocean Energy 2012, which will take place in Brussels on June 26-27.
The recent Member State position paper "Towards European industrial leadership in Ocean Energy in 2020" , co-signed by nine Member States, underlines the potential for marine energy alone to provide 26,000 direct EU jobs from ocean energy by 2020 and 314,000 direct EU jobs from ocean energy in 2050.
“Ocean energy has the potential to create a pan-European supply chain with jobs in component manufacturing, infrastructure development, maintenance and many other sectors, given the right political and financial framework,” says Sandra Parthie, Chair of the European Ocean Energy Association.
“I would encourage anyone with an interest in the sector to attend this year’s conference, where there will be the opportunity to meet all of the key policy makers, investors, utilities, industrial companies and developers with expertise and interest in ocean energy, ” Ms Parthie said.
The conference will also explore the potential ocean energy offers to maritime communities faced with declining traditional industries.
Last year the European Commission published a paper “Developing a Maritime Strategy for the Atlantic Ocean Area” , which affirmed its intent to explore synergies between European energy policy and the integrated maritime policy in order to promote more energy generation from the sea.
The EU-OEA’s Ocean Energy 2012 will offer delegates an unparalleled opportunity to network with the leading policy makers, industrial players, supply chain partners, utilities and investors as they address the issues that face the future of the industry. Sessions include updates from the first operational ocean energy projects, options for developing a viable ocean supply chain, insights on technology and project cost reduction and options available for obtaining finance and reducing project risk.
