Houdini-style magician adds edge to historic Canal Days celebration; special “Twitter Magic Madness Pre-show” on June 20th open to dedicated – and fast-acting -- Tweeters

Akron, OH., June 14, 2012-- When daredevil escape artist Michael Griffin as Harry Houdini is bound, gagged and tossed into the historic Ohio-Erie Canal during the Canal Days Arts Festival and Rubber Duck Derby on Sat., June 30, the scene will honor  Akron’s  rough-and- tumble roots when bar fights not bicycles ruled the Towpath Trail.
Want a gasp-worthy preview? Sign up for the free “Canal Days Twitter Magic Madness Pre-Show” on Wed., June 20 at 12:30 p.m. in front of the Mustill Store. The store is at 248 Ferndale St., just off West North Street in central Akron. The first 20 people who register for the pre-show and have at least 20 followers on Twitter – will be admitted only if they cross their hearts and promise to Tweet about Griffin’s feats (#escapeguy) and the upcoming  (#canaldays ) celebration. (We’re calling it “word of thumb” advertising.) Those who qualify for the pre-show may bring along as many as four family members or friends.   For a peek at Griffin’s death-defying feats, click on http://www.youtube.com/escapeguy
Don’t worry. The Cascade Park Locks Association is still bringing back the most popular features of the Canal Days festival, which raises funds for further restoration of the historic locks and park.  Artist stalls, food vendors, musicians and a kids’ crafts and play area will keep families entertained between duck races.  The completely restored Mustill store (circa 1820) offers children a history lesson the moment they step inside.
Duck Derbies will be ongoing throughout the festival that lasts from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Festival-goers may buy rubber ducks to race along the canal. One duck is $5; groups of five ducks are $20; ducks for the 50/50 raffle race are $10. Admission to Griffin’s magic show in the afternoon is free.  The ducks may be purchased in advance on www.cascadelocks.org or at the festival.
To register for the free “Canal Days Twitter Magic Madness Pre-show” contact the CLPA executive director Ferris Brown by email at Ferris@cascadelocks.org or call 330-374-5625. Or contact the park through its Facebook site Facebook/Cascade Locks Park Association.

Cascade Locks Park is located just minutes north of downtown Akron. Parking is available at the Cascade Valley Trailhead, located on North Street just west of the intersection of North Howard and North Street. Nestled between locks 10-16 of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, it is the perfect place to enjoy nature without leaving the city. Cascade Locks Park has seen major changes and growth, and has been a catalyst in the redevelopment of the North Howard Street district.
