Rob Zombie To Take On The Broad Street Bullies

Zombie Options the Rights to the Philadelphia Flyers Team Story

June 19, 2012 - PRLog -- LOS ANGELES –Rob Zombie has optioned the theatrical rights to the story of the “Broad Street Bullies”, the legendary mid-1970's version of the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team. The Bullies were known for their aggressive playing style that included fighting and intimidation as tactics in their rise from fledging newcomers to a powerhouse franchise.

The Bullies were recently the subject of a critically acclaimed 2010 HBO 24/7 Sports documentary.

“I’m excited to share this story where Rocky meets Boogie Nights on ice. Each character involved is more outrageous than the next," says Zombie, “The backdrop of the turbulent year of 1974 is perfect for this ‘stranger than fiction’ sports tale."

The project has the support of the Flyer’s organization, which will cooperate with Zombie and pull no punches in telling the team’s incredible story, including the infamous game against the Soviet Red Army team in which the “unbeatable” Russians stormed off the ice, intimidated by the Flyers’ no-holds-barred approach. They eventually returned to the ice for a crushing defeat at the hands of the Flyers.

Bobby Clarke, the ex-captain and current Senior Vice President of the Flyers, states, “The great Rob Zombie making a drama feature film about the Broad Street Bullies is exciting and thrilling for all of us!  I look forward to seeing it.”
Zombie will produce along with Andy Gould, Les Borsai, and Jeremy Platt.  The team is currently securing financing and will begin casting in the near feature.

Rob Zombie is currently finishing post production on his latest feature film The Lords of Salem, the next picture from Haunted Movies, a partnership between Jason Blum, Steven Schneider, and Oren Peli (Insidious, Paranormal Activity franchise), and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones of Automatik.    Rob Zombie is one of the only artists to have unprecedented success as both the writer and director of six feature films, and as one of the defining rock music icons of his generation. He’s been nominated for 7 GRAMMY Awards and has sold over 15 million albums worldwide. His film credits include the cult smash House of 1000 Corpses (Lionsgate 2003) and its landmark sequel The Devil’s Rejects (Lionsgate 2005), the animated film The Haunted World of El Superbeasto (Film Roman 2009), and the record-breaking blockbuster re-imagining of John Carpenter’s Halloween (Dimension 2007), along with its sequel Halloween 2 (Dimension 2009), which gave new life to the franchise.
