According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, diabetes affects 8.3% of the U.S. population – 25.8 million people of all ages. In greater Gardner, it is estimated that over 4150 patients have been diagnosed with diabetes and more than 1,120 patients have the disease and remain undiagnosed, leaving them at severe risk for cardiovascular disease, stroke, nerve damage to the extremities, and blindness.

The Diabetes Center of Excellence at Heywood builds upon existing programs the hospital offers, including Community Diabetic Cooking Classes and the Off Our Rockers program, targeted toward instilling healthy eating and exercise habits in school-age children, ultimately reducing childhood obesity and adult diabetes.
“Controlling diabetes is a leading community health issue,” said Winfield S. Brown, Heywood’s president and CEO. “I would like to thank our 2012 Golf Classic sponsors and players whose generosity will allow us to make a significant impact on the health of our community. Our Diabetes Center of Excellence is dedicated to reducing the impact of diabetes in our region by promoting healthy lifestyle choices that have been known to reverse diabetes or even stop the disease from developing.”
