Follow on Google News | Fitness Event Raises Fund for Erskine HospitalDesigned to challenge participants of different ages and fitness levels, the instructors ran a mix of 3 hour long circuits across three locations in Helensburgh, Loch Lomond and finishing up at Erskine hospital.
By: Incentive Media At only 54 years, Elaine Crichton’s father was diagnosed with dementia and Erskine Hospital has provided vital support to him but to his family. Organiser Elaine wanted raise funds for Erskine where her dad has been living for the last 5 years to thank the hospital someway for the exceptional support she feels her family has received. After trying what felt like every fitness class and diet available, Elaine joined SOS fitness in February this year. At 17st 2lbs, she wanted to lose weight, get fit and most importantly to find something that worked long term. Three months later and Elaine had already lost nearly three stone, needing no further encouragement to be a convert to the SOS school of fitness. Added to this, the newly found friends, support and enjoyment from the classes led Elaine to approach the SOS instructors to support with an event for Erskine. "I should have known better really but I thought I would have a job convincing them! However, it could not have been more different and the instructors immediately agreed to help. When I suggested doing circuits in different locations the team stepped up straight away and before we knew it over 60 people had signed up to take part!", said Elaine. The SOS Fitness instructors and members got into the spirit of things with a variety of fancy dress and camouflage gear, and were quick to encourage competition and support throughout the day. Local businesses were also keen to get involved with the Helensburgh Buffet shop providing lunches for the team and Wilson’s of Rhu running free bus transport between each location. "The great thing about SOS is there is such a broad range of people with different levels of fitness and there is such a positive atmosphere. Everyone is challenged and encouraged to be the best they can be," said Lorraine Fraser, a SOS member. "It was absolutely brilliant and so much fun to take part in the event but after the second circuit we were all beginning to feel tired. However in true SOS style the instructors encouraged us all and everyone had a massive final push to the end to raise as much money as possible for the charity!" Erskine Hospital has been looking after our veterans for almost 100 years and is the leading care organisation for ex-Service men and women in Scotland and fundraising is vital to their continued success. Alan Ross, Community Fundraiser from Erskine Hospital said, "We were delighted with the SOS Fitness event and the atmosphere was terrific." "Many younger veterans need help finding a job, recovering from an injury or post-traumatic stress disorder and our supported transition project works with younger veterans as young as 19 years old and we aim to provide them with counselling, work experience and support making the transition from the services to civilian life. Strong links with the community and events such as the SOS charity day help us to do this and raise awareness that Erskine can support any ex-service personnel when they need it most." Steve Losh, SOS Fitness Director said, "the Hospital staff do a fantastic job in providing care for ex-service personnel and their families and make a real different to so many lives." "At SOS Fitness we pride ourselves on our sense of family and community. One overwhelming comment fed back is about the sense of support within the classes and of course we are delighted to help out both our members and the local community with vital fundraising." After the event, Elaine said, "The day was such hard work but I've never laughed so much whilst being in pain in my life! All the team were brilliant and the instructors were tough on us, which they always are, but we love them anyway! I have never seen a group with such team spirit and friendship before and we are now all great friends supporting each other to achieve our personal goals. I feel the best and most confident I have had in years!" The SOS Fitness day for Erskine Hospital raised over £2,000. SOS Fitness Instructors are all serving armed forces fitness personnel who run fitness classes and a variety of boot camps for civilians. For further information go to www.sosfitness.co.uk. End
